Aparna is right. What holds us Indians back is the lack of self-esteem and self-confidence. The youth leave everything in the hands of their elders and when they become older, expect the same attitude from their children. It is a viciuos circle.

This blog was brought to my notice by my sister Aparna. Though I am American and she is Indian, she is closer to me than any biological sister could be. Indians are great people, very talented and cultured, but I think that they realize their full potential only when they go abroad from the stultifying society that prevails in India. The youth need a change in their mindset, but that should be done very early in their lives.

There is a village in Tamil Nadu where for the last 30 years have celebrated Diwali without the tradititonal bursting of crackers for fear of disturbing the birds in the nearby sanctuary. Here is a story that reveals the state of our social conditions. "A couple in Orissa abandoned their two young daughters after getting a son. Mamuni, 3 and Chumukhi 2 were left at Khurda railway station by their father.Mamuni, in her broken voice said that her mother had told their father to take them away and leave them wherever he wanted. Her father took them to the railway station and disappeared. The railway police found them and handed over the kids to Padmashree Society, a local orphanage."

I take issue with Democracy, Demography and Diversity mentioned by Mashelkar. Our version of Democracy is faulty; it gives too much power to the corrupt politicians. Mashelkar finds fault with the Chinese policy of restricting children to one per couple. What we need in India is to put a stop to the population explosion. What will we do with the millions of children whom we cannot feed properly and cannot educate properly. The Diversity of the population is exploited by the narrow-minded politicians to create divisions within the country. Mashelkar, do your home work well!

The third reading brings out how the use of words with emotional feelings can obscure the real facts, and how the fallacies in argument can mislead an unwary audience. This is great! I have been trying to change the mindset of our youth with my very limited ability to go public. Unless our youth try to exchew irrational beliefs they will never come up in life. Once they begin to think that everything in their lives is predestined, they will never find initiative for achieving greatness. Their parents and other elders are the main culprits.
